The Brevard Philharmonic opened its fourth concert season on
September 28th of 2008. This is the second season under the
direction of Maestro Donald Portnoy. All concerts will be in Scott Concert Hall
in the Porter Center for the Performing Arts on the Brevard College campus, which provides accessibility for the disabled.. The
Porter Center is acclaimed as one of the South's finest concert
halls.
The 2008-2009 season began with guest appearances by
pianist Susan Starr; organist Charlie Steele, performing on the Porter Center's
Kirkpatrick-Coleman pipe organ; and the Brevard College
Concert Choir under the direction of Dr. Michael Porter. The season continues with the husband and wife duo of
mezzo-soprano Carol Sparrow and tenor Randolph Locke and will conclude on May 17 with trumpet soloist Larry
Black.

The Brevard Orchestra Association sponsors performances by musical ensembles and performing arts groups under its Music in the Schools program. Elementary and middle school students are introduced to several of the instrument families throughout the school year.
BOA wishes to extend a particular thanks to Brevard College and the Transylvania County Library for their co-sponsorship and expresses thanks also to Dr. Sonna Lyda, Superintendent of Schools and to the school board for their cooperation with these events.

The BOA String Program
sponsored by the BOA offers instruction in violin, viola, cello and string
bass. Students are eligible to participate beginning in the fourth grade.
Students in Transylvania Public Schools, area private and home-schooled
children can enroll in beginning, intermediate and advanced classes. Locations
include both Rosman and Brevard.
This program is an after-school
activity sanctioned by Transylvania Public Schools and is taught by Ellen
Yarborough-Lee. Ellen has extensive experience teaching string classes.
