On stage at Porter Center

The Brevard Philharmonic is a 55-member orchestra performing a five-concert season in Brevard, North Carolina. The Philharmonic, started in 2005, is the successor organization to the Brevard Chamber Orchestra, started in 1976 with Jackson Parkhurst as Conductor. The orchestra is composed of qualified professional and community players as well as music faculty members from area colleges. The orchestra also welcomes applications from area college students.

The Philharmonic began its fourth season in September 2008 and its second season under the Direction of Dr. Donald Portnoy. Dr. Portnoy is universally recognized as one of America’s most dynamic and inspiring symphony conductors. He holds the Ira McKissick Koger Endowed Chair for the Fine Arts at the University of South Carolina, where he is Director of Orchestra studies. He appears regularly as guest conductor at home and abroad, and is Conductor of the Augusta, Georgia Symphony.

Concerts of the Philharmonic take place in the Scott Concert Hall of the Porter Center for the Performing Arts on the Brevard College camps. The Porter Center is acclaimed as one of the South's finest concert halls.
