The Transylvania Youth String Program was founded in 2004 as an independent string program offering
group instruction in violin, viola, cello and string bass to 4th and 5th grade students. It
received student scholarship aid from the then Brevard Chamber Orchestra Association. The
following year it became an integral part of the newly named Brevard Orchestra Association. This
was a big step forward for the program.
In 2006, TYSP became an after-school program at Pisgah Forest Elementary School.
Funding provided by the BOA now enables students to participate free of charge in the
program. This is also a big step forward. Students who cannot afford to rent an instrument are
provided with a BOA-owned instrument. We also are in the process of acquiring instruments from various sources.
Twelve instruments have been donated by private citizens and one business already.
Twenty-one students participated in the 2006-2007 program and we hope to see the numbers grow each
year. Our ultimate goals are to have strings put in the school curriculum, as well as to have a
full Youth Orchestra in the county.
The string students perform two formal concerts a year and are also happy to perform at various civic
functions as well.
Thank you for your support, past, present and future.
